Y6 Football

On 22nd January, the Roxeth Year 6 football team participated in a tournament at Whitmore Secondary School, including 4 other schools. The format consisted a total of four league matches. With this being the first set of fixtures in 2025, the Roxeth team were hoping to continue their superb form from last year.

The first match was against Marlborough. From the beginning of the match Marlborough were playing positive and impressive football pinning Roxeth back into a low-block formation, causing what could be called one-way traffic! With excellent blocking, tackling and a tiny bit of luck the score read 0-0 at halftime. The second half produced some fantastic moments from both teams who showed extreme amounts of desire to win the match. The standout highlight in the second half was to come within the last seconds…Ethan’s defence splitting pass was excellently controlled by Roxeth’s Jamie Vardy (Aryan Mistry) who unluckily had his 1-versus-1 against the Goalkeeper saved -an almost repeat of Aryan’s winning goal against St. George’s last year. The final whistle blew. 0-0. Although Roxeth couldn’t find the back of the net, keeping a ‘clean sheet’ was a success especially against a very good Marlborough side.

With no rest in between our next fixture, we faced Vaughan. The team seemed confident going into the match. Although in hindsight, maybe too confident. The match ended in defeat. 3-1. A positive to take from the game was that Ethan Bailey managed to score our first goal of the afternoon.

Our third match was against Newton Farm. This game was all about bouncing back from our defeat and if the team could show their desire and determination to win. Roxeth played an excellent game from beginning to end. Our relentless high pressing forwards Hamza and Aryan provided the assist for Ethan’s long-range screamer to go 1-0 up. A second goal from Ethan and a goalmouth scramble scored by Marvin ensured a 3-0 win. Although, it wouldn’t be the exciting attacking display that stole the show, it would be the defensive masterclass from Samad, Eric, Tejash and William whom once again didn’t concede a goal.

One win, One draw and One loss so far for Roxeth. Could the team end the day on a positive note?

The final match of the evening was against Grange and an all-out attack approach from the management team proved a succession one. Roxeth from minute one were on the front foot, playing fast paced football and masterful counter pressing. Excellent passing displays from Hamza, Denis, Adam and Vyom showed how creative the team can be. Our first goal was scored by Ethan, who’s thunderbolt of a strike whistled past the keeper into the back of the net. Seconds later another ‘worldie’ goal was almost scored. Ethan passing the ball backwards to Marvin on the righthand side of the box (or should I say Marvin Alexander-Arnold) who’s shot curled marvellously across goal and crashed against the crossbar, missing out by the smallest of margins. This clearly gave the team an extra uplift as Marvin went on to score 2 goals to help claim another 3-0 victory.

Unfortunately, this was the end of our day. With some slick football being played, the team finished with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. A massive well done to all of our players, who should be very proud of their achievements: Adam, Aryan, Denis, Eric, Ethan, Hamza, Marvin, Samad, Tejash, Vyom, and William.
