Y6 Football

On 5th November the Roxeth Year 5 & 6 football team participated in the Barnet Cup finals day at The Hive. The competition included 24 teams in total, split into 4 pools of 6, where each would play a total of 5 matches and the winner of each group progressing into the semi-finals.

The first match was against Pinner Park whom were a noticeably much taller side. The match was very close and it was Pinner Park’s height that scored a fantastic header to win the match 1-0. Roxeth played some excellent slick passing football, but unfortunately couldn’t find the back of the net. There were lots of positives to take from the match and it was a very strong performance with an unlucky result.

The next match was against Grange and the discussion amongst Teachers and Parents was could Roxeth show the desire and determination to bounce back with a win? Roxeth played an excellent game from beginning to end, with fast passing moves, controlling possession and fantastic ‘Gegenpressing’- Jürgen Klopp would be proud! Two clinical finishes from Adam ensured a 2-0 win for Roxeth as well as some very mature debut performances so far from Year 5’s Eesa and Romeo.

The third match was a big one. Our next opponents were Pinner Wood - the school that beat us in the semi-finals in our previous tournament! From the very beginning you could see Roxeth’s determination to win, but it was their eagerness that left spaces open in our defence for Pinner Wood to score first. Again it was noticeable how well Roxeth was keeping possession, dominating the ball and piling on the pressure just like they had in the two previous matches. Finally, it was the Roxeth debutant Eesa stepping up with a long range shot which dazzled the goalkeeper with its knuckleball movement…1-1! Roxeth’s passion to win was nearly their downfall, they began to rush passes, shooting from unrealistic ranges and taking too many touches, however out of nowhere a Mr.G style piece of defending from Marvin, winning a crunching tackle, then deciding to dribble past 2 players and pass a lovely weighted through ball to Aryan who slotted the ball calmly with a first time finish into the bottom corner. The final whistle blowing as the ball hits the back of the net. Roxeth win 2-1!

The fourth game Roxeth faced was against Norbury. This was one of those matches you see on Match Of The Day - a classic 1-0 hard earned win. The only goal of the game came from Eesa whose wild long range shot (originally heading out for a throw-in) took a huge deflection which deceived the keeper. Roxeth held on for the win with some impressive defensive displays from Denis, Vyom and Tamryn.

The final match against Cannon Lane  unfortunately proved to be our last of the tournament, but this didn’t stop the team playing with flair and style. Roxeth throughout looked comfortable, and were managing to get the ball wide to Ethan (or should I say Roxeth’s Rashford). Ethan provided 2 assists for Eesa who ended up scoring a fantastic hat-trick. The standout goal was Eesa’s second of the match, a first-time high looping lob over the goal keeper, a spectacular effort! The match finished 3-1 to Roxeth, with an overall superb afternoon of football.

Unfortunately, this was the end of our tournament, missing out by 1 goal in order to progress into the semi-finals. Roxeth’s tournament finished with 4 wins and only one loss. A massive well done to all of the players, who should be very proud of their achievements: Adam, Aryan, Denis, Eesa, Ethan, Marvin, Romeo, Tamryn, Vyom and William.
